A brief History of the College

The seminal idea of setting up a College in Boko arose in the mind of a band of dedicated persons pioneered by the veteran leadership of Late Prabin Kumar Choudhury, the then Transport Minister of Assam who cherished to spread higher Education in the rural areas to cater to the need of the poorest of the poor tribal people of the locality.

The liberal policy of the University in granting affiliation to colleges in rural areas gave impetus to the people of their long cherished desire was materialized with the inception of the college in the 3rd August 1964. The formal functioning of the College started with its classes in the Boko High School premises in the evening. The college office was housed temporarily in the Pragati Bhawan, a public recreational centre.

The College made a humble beginning with a part time honorary Principal i/c and a staff of three, one part-time office Assistant, two choukidars and only 16 students on roll in the 1st Year Pre-University Class. The Governor of Assam was pleased to allot hundred bighas (35 acrs approx) of high land for the College by dereserving Jarapara V.G.R, two kms west of Boko P.S. on the northern side of National High way No. 37.

The Classes were shifted from Boko H.S. to the new building on the permanent site on 3rd August 1967. It is indeed a grand site in natural surroundings away from all sorts of disturbances of town. The college that was initially proposed to be named as Boko College later was named after the hollowed memory of the first Prime Minister of India Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In a condolence meeting held in Boko on 27th May, 1964 at the sad demise of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru decided to name the college after Nehru’s memory as a fiting tribute paid to him.

The college by now has overcome four decades of its existence amidst many ups and downs. From the academic session 1986 the science stream of the college came in to existence. The purpose was just to give an easy access to the poor meritorious students of this locality to continue their science education for the choice of a better career in this age of science and technology. Efficient and well qualified science teachers are engaged to look after the interest of the students. However, the Science stream was brought under deficit- grants in aid system in the year 1998.

The Science stream of the college is still in a very initial stage to improve. Efforts are on to open major course in all science subjects and to improve the infrastructure to attract the promoted students for the culmination of their science education: Major course In discipline like Anthropology, Botany, Geography, Mathematics and Zoology are already introduced to meet the need of the science students for their higher studies.

The college is on its march towards the celebration of the Golden Jubilee in the year 2014 and all possible measures are taken to bring excellence in the field of higher education of this college from time to come.
